As DIY artists' spaces face increasing scrutiny from government entities and landowners, coupled with the rising pressures of real estate in "revitalizing neighborhoods," artists and cultural workers are losing vital spaces and territories within cities. This dynamic creates a sense of instrumentalization for capital interests. While this "no-place" situation has spurred innovative mobile and nomadic practices, it has also impacted the working conditions and engagement of artists and creative workers in Alternative Cultural Places (ACPs) over time.

This three-day workshop focuses on the issues faced by ACPs and the strategies they employ to maintain their presence in gentrifying arts and cultural districts. We aim to explore the unstable, nomadic, and activist practices developed within ACPs as creative responses to the scarcity of space. Our ultimate objective is to explore engagement and dis-engagement, and to envision alternative organizational models that support the development of cultural workers while fostering more inclusive territories through political and community engagement.

This event is organised in the framework of ALTER PLACES project.

In collaboration with Trans Fest Stockholm, we invite you to an evening of contemporary trans short films. The pieces we have chosen for you range from documentary to art to fiction, and highlight an experience of trans queerness in our time.

In the age we live, an age formed and ruled by identity politics, how can we rise above and fly into the night as the non-identifiable creatures we’ve struggled to become?

Through love, sorrow and ocean, let’s get together on one of the last summer nights this year, and celebrate transformations.

PROGRAM

"Cosmos" (Sybille Bauer-Zierfuß, 12min, 2023) COSMO(S) is a declaration of love to the often bitter lessons of the past and the people who are a new, safe home to us. The marriage vows of the filmmaker Sybille to her partner and protagonist of the film Cosmo were turned into a portrait of their queer relationship.

"Scaffold" (Billy Klotsa) Fragments of bereavement and collapsing love appear in an isolated house between the land and the sea. Death arrives. The landscape shivers. What holds us close in moments of rupture?

"MAN" (Maja Ray Borg, 12min, 2016) MAN is an expansion of gender and language, a journey of physical transformation through the wilderness of pregnancy echoed by the sole remaining recording of Virginia Woolf’s voice.

"Pieces of Earth we Eat" (Lu Yim, 9min, 2023) Pieces of Earth We Eat is a performance adapted for film. Filmed in a closed theater in Portland, Oregon, an all transgender cast chants their speculative spells and recites utopic feelings, in an attempt to wage care and grief against the disaster and crisis of now.

"Vapor Trails" (”Willow Skye Biggs,” 11min, 2023) In 1997 amidst the backdrop of distant violence two displaced women seek transcendence through connection.

"Om att vara sorg" (Vigo Roth Jinde, 27min, 2024) A hybrid film that explores how the collective sadness and happiness of the trans community is manifested within the community and in caring relationships. Through interviews, art sequences and documentary footage, a story is woven about sharing grief and happiness in close relationships and in the collective space.

Friday | September 13 | 18.00 | Free

Join us for a screening of the 2024 documentary Where Olive Trees Weep, followed by a panel discussion. This extraordinarily- moving documentary is a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss, trauma, and the quest for justice.

We follow, among others, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We also witness Dr. Gabor Maté offer trauma-healing work to a group of women who were tortured in Israeli prisons.

This event is free and no ticket is required. The screening is a part of the NGBG Festival and will be at full capacity. Arrive early.

LOVE LIES BLEEDING

Thursday, September 19 - Tuesday September 24 | Open 11.00-17.00 (Sunday 11.00-14.00) | Free

After captivating over 20.000 visitors at Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen and Cecilia Hillström Gallery in Stockholm, the acclaimed video installation ILOVERUSS by Tova Mozard arrives at Hypnos Theatre in Malmö.

In this multi-screen installation, we follow Tova Mozard and the struggling actor Russ Kingston in Hollywood over a 20-year period.

Mozard is a curious and caring observer of Russ' whims and acts, in this multi-layered storyline that unfolds over time. At the same time, it feels like we are witnessing one special condensed moment between the two friends, acted out in a confidential space with room for quirkiness, vulnerability and raw emotions.

In ILOVERUSS, Tova Mozard explores a search for a deeper meaning in life – in a society where self-forgetfulness and consumption dominate everyday life. It is also a blunt and honest portrait of two people's shared love of cinema and their urge to understand themselves, explored through their interactions with each other in this shared self-portrait of sorts.

In collaboration with Hypnos Theatre

The video installation will play on a loop throughout Nordisk Panorama Film Festival 19-24 September.

Step into a whimsical world with this off-kilter programme, where strange and delightful tales await. Carolina Sandvik's animated The Lovers blends horror and comedy as a couple faces bizarre physical transformations over dinner. Mariangela Pluchino's Peppermint Diesel 20% features a ritualistic revenge gone wrong at a petrol station. And Lumbago by Bendik Kalten- born is just about as odd as it gets. Playful, offbeat cinema that will leave you amused, intrigued – and possibly slightly weirded out.

Release Party for the long-awaited, second EP from 11am, Video!

Liam Amner's solo project, 11am, is equal parts playful experimentation and the beautifully-suggestive synth and drum driven instrumental pop we know from his work with Hey Elbow, Alice Boman, Vit PÀls, Guds Pengar and Dearest Sister. Liam has long been one of Sweden's, let alone Malmö's, most beloved drummers and we are very pleased to have him in our lineup. Video is a visual EP and we will begin the evening with a screening of his complimentary short film, followed by a solo concert by 11am.

The evening will conclude with a performance by the twin sisters and artistic duo, Flauto di Gemelli. A modern flute duo, their "performances transcend typical duet dynamics, embodying a single, cohesive entity that enriches the audience's experience through their seamless fusion of minds and music."
